Not long after Paige returned to the Massachusetts Academy, the school was attacked by Omega Red. Paige and the rest of Generation X were saved by Chamber, who managed single handedly to take out the villain. She awkwardly tried to thank Jono afterwards, but he brushed Paige off, feeling somewhat awkward himself. Following this event, both of them struggled with their feelings for some time. Before long, some of their teammates noticed, and Husk confided in Mondo that she feared a relationship with Chamber would never work. Mondo, though, pointed out that never was a long time. Paige didn’t get a chance to act on his advice because, before the conversation was even over, Generation X were kidnapped by minions of Emplate, Generation X’s personal arch villain. While the team eventually broke free, Emplate was able to brainwash Paige’s teammate, Synch, and set him after his family in St. Louis. In an effort to save their friend, Husk accompanied some of her teammates. Although Paige had been preparing herself in every way to become team leader, in the heat of the battle it was Jubilee and not her who came up with the perfect strategy to take Synch down. As he had troubles duplicating Paige’s powers, the plan involved her fighting Synch one-on-one to wear him down. However, when Synch interrupted one of her transformations before she was ready, Husk was caught in a rather painful form. Still, Paige fought on through the pain and was winning until she collapsed from the strain. The timely arrival of Monet ended the confrontation. [Generation X (1st series) #15-16]

Barely having come to terms with the information about the Legacy Virus, Paige then had to deal with a world that had a renewed hatred towards mutants, due to the Onslaught crisis, during which Professor X lost control of his powers and created a powerful entity that was responsible for the apparent deaths of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Banshee consoled Paige, telling her that the world was ugly, but they were fighting to make it a better place. When Franklin Richards, the son of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman, temporarily came to stay with Generation X, Paige was able to help him deal with his parents‘ deaths, since she had already lived through the death of her father. For her first Thanksgiving after enrolling at Xavier’s, Paige invited Jono to go back to the Guthrie farm with her. Jono spent the whole trip explaining to Paige that he could never give her the normal, happy life that she wanted. Eventually, Paige yelled at Jono, saying that she kissed him because she liked him, not because she wanted a relationship with him like her mother had with her father. Jono left the Guthrie farm, telling Paige he hoped that he didn’t ruin her Thanksgiving and that it was a bad idea for him to come along with her. Although Paige called him a jerk, she began to cry when he was gone. The experience was so bad that, a few months later for Christmas, Paige decided to go to Monaco with Jubilee, Monet and Emma instead of back home to the farm. [Generation X (1st series) #23-24]

Soon thereafter, Generation X was soon attacked by Black Tom Cassidy, who kidnapped Paige and most of the other students and placed them somewhere in the Pacific on a raft made of plants. Adrift in the ocean, the kids were about to die from exposure, and especially Paige was in a bad shape as her body in shock from Black Tom having caught her in mid transformation. However, when Jono tried to protect Paige from the sun, she angrily told him that if they were going to be teammates he needed to treat her as an equal. Fortunately, the team was found by Glorian, the Shaper of Dreams. Trying to give them happiness, Glorian altered reality so that Jono had his face restored and was still aiming to be a rock star, with Paige being his girlfriend. However, eventually Glorian had to realize that he hadn’t looked deep enough, as his gifts weren’t what Generation X truly desired. For example, the last thing Paige wanted was to be taken care of. Instead, Glorian transported the teenagers to Los Angeles. [Generation X (1st series) #25-26, 28]

In L.A., Generation X were hunted by Prime Sentinels of Bastion‘s Operation: Zero Tolerance. While hiding out in a garage, well aware that these might be their final minutes together, Jono apologized to Paige for the ruined Thanksgiving and the two actually began to get along with each other. Thanks to Husk’s inventiveness and a good portion of luck, the mutant teenagers managed to survive until Bastion’s operation was shut down by S.H.I.E.L.D. and they could safely return home to the Massachusetts Academy. While Paige and the others were in town having dinner one evening, the school was broken into and several items were stolen, one of which was Paige’s diary, containing a lot of secrets regarding Xavier‘s. Paige, Jubilee and Angelo tracked down the thief only to learn that she was none other Tracey Authier, the daughter of the local chief of police. Although Tracey had read the diary, she just thought it was all a product of Paige’s imagination. She still used the diary to blackmail Paige into taking Tracey to the Institute and showing her around. Unfortunately, their visit happened to coincide with Emplate attacking the school, and Tracey witnessed first hand supernatural beings, such as a Token and a Pooka. Apparently, the experience of seeing generation X in action and the good influence of her father changed Tracey, so that she would not tell anyone about the students being mutants. On a trip to the Harvest Festival, Generation X encountered a group of Asgardian Trolls who sent a Ferris Wheel rolling out of control. The team worked to make sure no one was hurt, during which Paige acted as leader. Seeing her transform, the Trolls thought she was capable of using “magic” and kidnapped her, hoping that she could help them to get back to Asgard. In order to appease the trolls, Paige gave them some of her husked gold skin, making them promise to go deep into the woods where they wouldn’t scare anyone. [X-Men Unlimited (1st series) #20]

Receiving a call from her brother, Sam, Paige learned that their mother was very sick. She decided to head back home to take care of her family while her mother was undergoing therapy. Before she left, she made it a point to talk with Jono, and asked him to stay at the Academy at least until she got back, for they still had a lot of things to sort out between them. Jono, who had temporarily lost his ability to communicate telepathically, a side-effect of the so-called Psi-War between Psylocke and the Shadow King, burned a heart into a piece of paper with his powers, showing Paige that he was going to be there when she got back.
