JUBILEE: Page 2 of 10

BIOGRAPHY - Page 2

When the mutant-hating government of Genosha began attacking mutants in the United States, Wolverine led his companions to the island itself to stop them. In the streets, the trio ran into Rictor and Boom-Boom, a pair of New Mutants who were among the first captured but who had escaped. Though they had evaded the full Mutate bonding process, both had been rendered powerless. Jubilee was assigned to safeguard them, while Wolverine and Psylocke tried to invade the citadel of the Genoshan Magistrates. They were captured as well, just like most members of the New Mutants, X-Factor and other former members of the X-Men. Jubilee and Boom-Boom clashed due to their somewhat similar attitudes. Despite this friction, the three youngsters managed to avoid capture several times and eventually made their own way into the Genoshan citadel, where they joined the other X-teams for the final showdown against Cameron Hodge, the villain behind Genosha’s recent attacks. [X-Tinction Agenda crossover]

Back in the United States, the X-Men were reformed under Storm's command with Wolverine, Psylocke and Jubilee as members, along with Forge, Gambit and Banshee. Though Jubilee was the youngest member, she proved herself a valuable asset when the team was teleported to the Shi'ar Empire by Lila Cheney. There, the X-Men were reunited with their long-lost mentor, Charles Xavier. Jubilee and Gambit, who had never met the man before, were suspicious of his motives – with good reason, as it turned out that he had been replaced by a Warskrull imposter. Jubilee was soon captured and replaced as well. Eventually, the X-Men came through and exposed the Warskrulls’ infiltration of the Shi’ar Empire. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #273-277]

When Xavier and the X-Men returned to Earth, they found that the supreme telepath known as the Shadow King had taken over the Muir Island Research Facility and the minds of its residents. Most of the X-Men were captured when they arrived on the island. Stateside, Prof. Xavier freed the mind of the Shadow King's other puppet, Colossus, and enlisted the help of both X-Factor and SHIELD. The remaining X-Men and X-Factor attacked the island’s residents a second time and managed to free them, leading to the eventual defeat of the Shadow King. During this conflict, Jubilee was forced to fight Wolverine herself and Logan had no choice but to subdue her. After the Shadow King’s defeat, the pair of them had a difficult time getting past this. Logan even asked her to quit the X-Men but she refused and stayed on board, despite his request. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #278-280, X-Factor (1st series) #69-70]

In the wake of this incident, the combined X-Men reorganized into two distinct strike teams. Jubilee was not intended to accompany the X-Men on missions, but became a consistent ally of the Blue Strike Force on which both Wolverine and Psylocke served. When Wolverine was kidnapped by operatives of the Hand, Jubilee argued with Cyclops and Xavier that she should take part in the rescue mission since she had previously encountered the ninja organization. To her surprise, Psylocke vouched for her, despite the hard time she had given the telepath before. The X-Men faced not only the Hand but Omega Red, Sabretooth and Maverick as well, but they succeeded in liberating Wolverine. [X-Men (2nd series) #4-7]

Jubilee would often accompany Wolverine on his nightly strolls through New York City, so when he didn’t want her around one evening, she knew something was up. She secretly followed him to a motel, only to find Jean Grey coming out of his room only partially dressed. This was actually Mystique (Logan had known it was her all along), who needed his help in a cosmic crisis called The Crunch Conundrum. Spiral, from whom Mystique had been running, explained that “The Crunch” was the opposite of the Big Bang – the one started the universe, the other would end it. While the three unwitting allies tried to stop this event, Jubilee found herself kidnapped by Mojo. The other-dimensional filmmaker tried to make her his slave, telling her that Logan would die if she didn’t accept. Jubilee didn’t trust the obese foe and Logan’s group managed to survive their adventure. The crisis averted, the assembled players were returned from the Citadel at the End of Time, where most of the conflict had taken place. Jubilee rematerialized in Japan along with Wolverine’s bike, where she was arrested for driving without a license. [Wolverine (2nd series) #51-53]

When Wolverine and Gambit traveled to Tokyo to bail her out, they immediately got caught in a local war between the Hand, Japanese Yakuza and Clan Yashida. It became even more complicated when former X-Man, Sunfire, and one of the surviving Reavers, Cylla Markham, became involved as well. Jubilee was almost killed by a hired assassin of the Hand, but eventually ended up in the care of Yukio. She didn’t know what to make of the strange woman who had aided the X-Men several times in the past. When Yukio correctly guessed that Jubilee had a big crush on Logan, Jubilee acted somewhat jealous towards her. However, upon learning of Mariko Yashida, Logan’s true love, Jubilee accepted Yukio and started working together with her to take out Cylla. While the heroes were busy fighting, Mariko was fatally poisoned by Matsuo Tsurayaba, the Hand’s leader. Logan sat by Mariko’s grave for days, not moving, and Jubilee was only partly successful in distracting him from his grief. She began to realize that, while they trusted each other with their lives, there was still a lot about Logan she didn’t know. [Wolverine (2nd series) #55-57, 60]

Jubilee continued to fight alongside the X-Men against the Brood and Mojo. Eventually, it was decided that she was simply too young and inexperienced to continue going on dangerous missions with the team, so Jubilation was reassigned to mansion status to concentrate more on her studies. [X-Men (2nd series) #13] Soon after this, Professor Xavier was almost assassinated during a public speech by someone who seemed to be Cable. The various X-teams pooled their resources to bring in the villain. When clues pointed to Stryfe and the MLF, Jubilee of all people pointed out that nobody knew what Stryfe looked like and that he could actually be Cable in disguise. Her deduction startled everyone present, though at the time nobody knew how close to the truth she truly was. Stryfe turned out to be Cable’s clone and the culprit behind the entire series of assaults. [X-Cutioner’s Song crossover]

When Professor Xavier temporarily regained the use of his legs after being cured from a techno-organic virus, he and Jubilee spent some time bonding. The youngster convinced Xavier that he should try out rollerblading at least once and then deliberately made him crash into a pond of water on the Xavier Estate. That night, Jubilee came to realize that the Professor was more than a stiff guy making the rules and the two of them enjoyed their time together, until he once again lost the use of his legs. Jubilee didn’t know the right words to offer him as she helped get him back to his wheelchair. In aiding her mentor, she realized that there was no need for words at all - it just needed doing. During a reconnaissance mission to the old Reavers base in Australia, Wolverine and Jubilee triggered a damaged Sentinel’s repair sequence. The reactivated robot’s attack interacted with Gateway’s teleportation vortex and Jubilee found herself transported into the past - to the day her parents died. Jubilee was trying to warn them not to drive into town, when the doorbell rang. Two hired killers named Reno and Molokai were waiting outside. Jubilee learned that her parents’ death was no accident but had been intentionally made to look like one. Jubilee couldn’t imagine what her parents might have done to be targeted in this way and assumed the killers must have got the wrong couple and were actually after the Lees who lived next door.

After returning to the present, Jubilee wanted to track down and kill the two thugs and Logan encouraged her. They found Reno and Molokai in Los Angeles and easily overcame them. Jubilation had her parents’ murderers at her mercy but found that she couldn’t go through with it. Logan applauded her decision and knew that she wouldn’t become a killer but wanted her to discover that for herself. Jubilee found her own way of exacting a measure of revenge against Reno and Molokai. [Wolverine (2nd series) #72-74]

Jubilee found a true home among the X-Men, creating a new family for herself as she began interacting with several other people besides Wolverine. When Colossus' parents were killed and his younger sister, Illyana, was brought to the mansion. Jubilee took a liking to the child, though she constantly called the child "Little Pimple." It wasn’t long before the team discovered that Illyana had contracted the Legacy Virus and was in the final stages of the deadly disease. Jubilee stayed at her bedside and would read stories to her, just as Kitty Pryde did years earlier when she first came to the United States. Kitty visited as soon as she received the news about Illyana’s rapidly declining health. At first, Jubilee was jealous of Kitty. Not only was she a former "sidekick" of Wolverine but it was apparent that she and Illyana shared a deep bond. Jubilee’s initial envy soon faded, as she and Kitty both shared a deep love and concern for Illyana. Tragically, Illyana succumbed to the virus within the matter of days. Only Piotr was as deeply affected by her passing as Jubilee was. [X-Men (2nd series) #17-19, Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #302-303]

A few weeks later, Wolverine encountered Magneto, who magnetically pulled the adamantium in Logan's skeleton out through his pores. The feral X-Man nearly died as a result and was left a shadow of his former self. It was also discovered that his metal claws were not simply implants, as had always been believed, but that there were naturally occurring bone claws under the metal. Logan temporarily left the X-Men to find some answers and to heal properly, as he explained in a letter to Jubilee. He also left her his favorite cowboy hat, knowing the emotional anguish his departure would cause her. [Wolverine (2nd series) #75]
