Introduction

Xavier’s school has been a key ingredient in the X-Men mythos since its inception. Over the years, its student body has evolved and expanded. However, until recently Xavier’s mutant followers all lived under the pretense that they were merely students at Xavier’s exclusive academy and kept their mutant nature a secret from the outside world. Recent events have lifted the veil of secrecy and the mutant nature of the Xavier Institute has become public knowledge. Where once there were only a handful of mutants living and studying at the school, there are now just over 100 students enrolled.

Overall first appearance: X-Men (1st series) #1 - as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters
Uncanny X-Men #318 - renamed the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning
New X-Men #114 - as the expanded Xavier Institute

This special feature details the history of the Xavier Institute student body and provides an in-depth look at the students who have joined the Institute since it went public and opened its doors as a haven for numerous mutant children and teenagers. Click on the links above to learn more about each group of students.

Note: The following listings provide a comprehensive look at the latest generation of Xavier’s students from the time the Xavier Institute went public to the present. For the purposes of this resource, we have attempted to be as comprehensive and accurate as possible. In order to receive a full profile in this section, the student must meet at least two of the three criteria listed below:

  • a canonically revealed real name or codename
  • a clear visual representation
  • a canonically stated squad affiliation

These brief character profiles include all canonical information pertaining to the character as well as select information that has been revealed online and verified by the character’s creators. All information that has not yet seen print in the actual comics will be noted as such by being highlighted in green.

A special thanks to Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis for providing additional information about their characters from New X-Men: Academy X.
