Vulcan
(Gabriel Summers)
Deathbird (Cal'syee Neramani)
After battling the Imperial Guard, Vulcan was arrested and locked in a Shi’ar prison, where he met Deathbird, who was also a prisoner. The pair escaped together, killing and destroying their way across the galaxy, falling in love as they did so. Together, they awoke Deathbird’s brother D’Ken from his catatonic state and helped him reclaim his position as emperor. D’Ken decided that, in order to consolidate power and to reward Vulcan for awakening him, the Earthman and Deathbird would marry. The pair married soon after in the presence of the M’Kraan Crystal, after which Vulcan doublecrossed D’Ken, killing him and proclaiming himself emperor. [Uncanny X-men (1st series) #480-486]
As emperor and empress, the pair led the Shi’ar Empire through a period of aggressive expansion, while also combating Deathbird’s sister Lilandra’s rebellion. During one fight with the rebels, Deathbird was skewrd through the chest by Lilandra and left in a comatose state. [X-Men: Kingbreaker #4] While she was comatose, Vulcan led the Shi’ar into a war with the Kree and was killed during a final epic confrontation with the Kree’s leader, Black Bolt. [War of Kings crossover] After Vulcan’s death, Deathbird's body was taken by the Providan Order, as she was pregnant with Vulcan’s child. She awoke and escaped with her unborn child.
