JUBILEE: Page 5 of 10

Once back in Los Angeles, Jubilee decided that, after following Xavier’s dream for so long, it was time to start pursuing her own dreams: she set out on becoming an actress. Her agent, Kristoff, proved to be a dubious individual. Skin warned Jubilee to be careful and pointed out that all her acting jobs were stereotypical Asian girl roles. Jubilee was only landing brief cameo roles and commercials. Jubilation wouldn’t listen and even accused Skin of being jealous. Eventually, Kristoff found her a bigger role, that of a sexy Asian prostitute. Once on set and in costume, Jubilee expressed some doubts about this role and whether this was the image she wanted to create for herself. When Kristoff hit on her and began to touch and kiss her, she had finally had enough. After giving him a good taste of her mutant powers, she turned her back on the movie business. She returned to Angelo and apologized for the way she had treated him. [X-Men Unlimited (1st series) #34]

After giving up her dreams of stardom, Jubilee joined other Generation X alumni as part of Banshee’s militaristic X-Corps, operating out of Paris, France. Jubilation and the others joined the group largely to keep an eye on Banshee, who had taken Moira's death hard. He had also resorted to using behavior-controlled villains as part of his peace-keeping unit. Their concerns were justified. The villains turned out to be unstable and X-Corps was destroyed from within. Banshee was critically injured and it was only with the aid of the X-Men that Jubilee and the other heroic members of the group were able to stop the malevolent X-Corps recruits’ rampage through Paris. After this, Jubilee presumably returned to Los Angeles to live with Skin. A short time later, they were among several mutants captured by the fanatically anti-mutant Church of Humanity and crucified on the X-Men's front lawn. The X-Men, especially Wolverine, were horrified to see their former charges used in this way. Luckily, the X-Men got to her in time and Jubilee’s life was saved by an emergency infusion of Archangel's healing blood. Sadly, Skin was not so lucky.

After Skin’s funeral, Jubilation had to work through her feelings of grief and guilt. A few days before the attack by the Church of Humanity, Angelo had asked her out on a date but she had refused. Looking back, she felt that she could have made her friend’s last days happier had she accepted. Husk helped Jubilee process her grief and convinced her that this kind of thinking wouldn’t help anyone or bring Skin back. [Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #423, 427]

Jubilee stayed at the Xavier Institute to recuperate and eventually began going on missions as a member of Archangel's squad, alongside her old friend, Husk. She often provided Paige a shoulder to cry on as she handled the problems created by her relationship with Archangel, who was more than 10 years older than her. Shortly thereafter, the mansion was once again completely destroyed and had to be rebuilt. In the aftermath, Xavier left for Genosha and Cyclops took over leadership of the X-Men and headmaster duties at the Institute. He rearranged the active X-Men into three different squads but Jubilee discovered she was not assigned to any of them. [X-Men (2nd series) #157]

Jubilee decided she had had enough of the drama that came with being an X-Man and needed a change. She had recently made contact with Hope, her paternal aunt from China, who had just moved to the U.S. When Hope invited her to come live with her in L.A., Jubilee told Logan her plan and set out for a more normal existence in California. After a minor conflict with some snotty girls at her new high school, the principal discovered that Jubilee was a mutant and threatened to expel her. To avoid this, Jubilee reluctantly agreed to serve as a peer counselor for other students who might be feeling isolated or persecuted. One of her advisees was an academically successful student who had fallen in with his neighborhood gang. Jubilee boldly confronted the leader of this gang, Shane Shooter, who was impressed by her confidence and attitude. Hearing that his new recruit had the potential to go to college, Shooter let him leave the gang without the normal repercussions. Additionally, Shooter took an immediate interest in Jubilee and was more than willing to help her locate her teacher’s stolen car to get close to her. During their little adventure, Jubilee learned that Shane was also a mutant and the two grew closer. However, when the two went on a date, their first kiss was interrupted by a surprise visit from Logan, who quickly put the brakes on their romantic moment.

Wolverine’s visit wasn’t the only surprise in store for her. Jubilee’s Aunt Hope turned out to be an assassin trying to break from her old life working for a Chinese crime lord, who was determined to get her back. His armed goons followed Hope home and it was only with Shane and Logan’s help that Jubilee survived the firefight that ensued. Rather than be dragged back into her old life, Hope blew up her home and allowed everyone to presume that she died in the explosion. Feeling she had no real reason to stay, Jubilee said goodbye to Shane and returned to New York. [Jubilee #1-6]

Soon after she returned, Jubilee's life was dramatically changed due to three simple words uttered by the powerful, yet mentally imbalanced, Scarlet Witch – “No more mutants.” Jubilation was one of millions of mutants suddenly de-powered by Wanda’s edict. At first, Jubilee was stunned at losing her powers and withdrew rather than reaching out to the X-Men for support. After some time to process, Jubilee finally touched base with the team. She proved her resilience once again and found a new purpose in life as a political activist with UseYourVoice.org. Jubilee and her co-workers fought tirelessly against conservative politicians with anti-mutant agendas. She also began working to help other former mutants who were picking up the pieces of their lives following M-Day. [Decimation: House of M – The Day After, Generation M #2]

Jubilee’s civilian life didn’t shield her from danger for long. She soon found herself in the middle of Wolverine’s quest to atone for his past – which he now remembered in full, thanks to the aftereffects of Wanda’s reality warp. Logan tracked his old Team X teammate Maverick to the mutant hostel where Jubilee volunteered. Unfortunately, he brought trouble with him. Omega Red attacked the place and took Jubilee hostage. S.H.I.E.L.D. was also pursuing Wolverine and Jubilee was caught in the crossfire. She barely survived a massive explosion that left her trapped under a massive piece of debris. Her injuries were severe and Logan found her with a potentially fatal wound to her abdomen. Wolverine willingly surrendered to Dum Dum Dugan of S.H.I.E.L.D. in exchange for his promise to save his surrogate daughter’s life. [Wolverine: Origins #6-10]

S.H.I.E.L.D. proved to be as good as their word and Jubilee made a swift recovery. She soon returned to work at the halfway house for depowered mutants. Shortly after, she was recruited by a mysterious new hero who had assumed the Night Thrasher identity after the original was killed during the Stamford tragedy that spawned the Superhuman Registration Act. Night Thrasher offered Jubilee the chance to get back into the heroic game and fight the new governmental regulations regarding superhumans adopted in the wake of the “civil war” among America’s super-heroes. Jubilee enthusiastically accepted. Night Thrasher equipped Jubilee with weapons and devices gleaned from super-villains: strength-enhancing gauntlets, Pym particles, anti-gravity devices and more. This new power set, coupled with her agility and experience, made her a natural field leader for the New Warriors team that she and Night Thrasher recruited. Like Jubilee, they were all former mutants seeking a new lease on life. Jubilee took the codename “Wondra” in reference to the Wizard’s Wonder Gloves that Night Thrasher repurposed to create her power gauntlets. Within weeks of their debut, Wondra and the New Warriors apprehended numerous big name villains like the Grey Gargoyle, Anaconda and the Rhino, all the while making very public slams against the new power policy enacted by Tony Stark.
