JUBILEE: Page 7 of 10

BIOGRAPHY - Page 7

When X-23 was having her own problems finding her way in the world, Wolverine thought it would be a good idea for Jubilee and her to talk. X-23 was initially disgusted by the concept of aligning herself with a vampire but Jubilee persisted and they soon realized they had a lot more in common than they first thought. Jubilee underestimated just how tortured X-23’s mind was, as the young girl cut her neck and presented it to her to drink from. Confronted by the blood, Jubilee tried to resist but couldn’t help but taste a small drop. That was enough though and she was quickly overwhelmed by visions from X-23’s memories and the hardships she had to endure as a child. Jubilee was furious at being manipulated like that, when she had worked so hard to control herself. She soon saw through X-23’s façade and how unhappy she was and she took pity on the girl instead.

The real reason Wolverine had invited Jubilee there though was to help X-23 track down an operation that intended to sell some trigger scent on the black market. The group quickly found the base of operations but they realized too late that they had walked into a trap. X-23 was doused with the trigger scent, a chemical that caused her to go into her own berserker rage. She ended up in a subway full of people and it was Jubilee who stopped her from killing anyone. Unfortunately the trigger scent was pumped into the subway and the group had their work cut out stopping the people from killing each other. Jubilee remained immune to the toxin, due to being a vampire, but she still had to try her hardest to rein in her violent tendencies as she fought the civilians. After saving the day, the two girls took a moment to talk and Jubilee told X-23 that, no matter where she was or what she was doing, she would always have a family. [X-23 (2nd series) #10-12]

There were still times when Jubilee felt the burden of her vampiric nature, such as when her birthday came and all her friends threw her a surprise party. It simply reminded her she would never age again, whilst those around her would. [X-Men (3rd series) #11]

When Wolverine and Cyclops had a differing of opinion on how to lead the X-Men, the two men went their separate ways. Whilst Wolverine went to re-start the school in Westchester, Jubilee stayed behind on Utopia and acted as part of the island’s security team. Her reasoning for staying behind was that she was still trying to suppress the urge to eat people and she figured everyone would be better off if she were away from the students. One of the first assignments of her new team was to take down an illegal Sentinel manufacturer in Eastern Europe. By now Jubilee was beginning to get used to her newfound powers that came along with her vampirism and her super strength proved to be quite the asset in destroying the Sentinels. The whole mission proved to be quite chaotic and it wasn’t until the end of the operation that the rest of the team realized Jubilee had gone missing. [X-Men (3rd series) #20-23]

Jubilee had been approached by a vampire named Raizo and he told her he would help her control her urges if she came with him. He was part of a group called the Forgiven, who had trained themselves to drink blood, but not from humans. Jubilee was locked in a room to detox from Wolverine’s blood and she soon began to regret Raizo’s invitation. They kept on offering her animal blood but she continued to refuse, as her body was crying out for human blood instead. She managed to escape from her cell and flee into the nearby woods, protected from the sunlight due to a magical necklace.

She came across a farmhouse and nearly fed on the man inside, only to stop when she saw a mirror but no reflection of her in it. Ashamed by what she was becoming, she returned to Raizo and asked for his help. After weeks of searching, the X-Men eventually tracked Jubilee down but, when they found her, she wasn’t keen on returning with them. After an initial fight, the X-Men ended up helping the Forgiven fend off their island hideaway from a bunch of hired mercenaries looking to wipe them out. Jubilee personally took on Lord Deathstrike and, even though she was run through with his sword, she still managed to take him out. After defeating the mercenaries, Jubilee had a long talk with Storm and decided to stay with the Forgiven, as she felt she could learn a lot from them. [X-Men (3rd series) #24-27]

Jubilee stayed with the group for quite a while and in that time the X-Men went through numerous upheavals, such as the Phoenix Force returning to Earth and the destruction of Utopia. After learning enough of the Forgiven’s ways to resist the urge to drink human blood, Jubilee left the group to find her own way in the world. She ended up in Budapest, Bulgaria and was witness to a meteor impact that leveled a chunk of a city. In the carnage, she rescued an orphan baby and immediately developed a maternal bond with him. Jubilee named the baby Shogo and quickly learned there was something more sinister afoot when she realized she was being followed by a strange man. She evaded him for a few weeks but soon came to the conclusion she needed help, and she made her way back to America. Unbeknownst to her, the man was John Sublime, the human host for an ancient sentient bacterium. The meteor that landed had brought his “sister” Arkea back to Earth and now he was trying to stop her from laying waste to the human race.

Arkea was able to use electrical impulses to inhabit and manipulate technology and she had managed to stow away in some cybernetics that Shogo possessed. Jubilee made contact with the X-Men when she got to the US and boarded a train to Westchester. The X-Men met her en-route and, when Arkea saw them, she caused the train to crash. The X-Men saved everyone and Jubilee was taken back to the new school so she could be checked over,

Sublime had decided to try a different tactic and he openly approached the X-Men and told them all about Arkea. It was too late though, as Arkea had left Shogo and jumped into the comatose Karima Shapandar, a human-sentinel hybrid. In her new body, Arkea got the drop on the X-Men and destroyed a good chunk of their lab before leaving for Europe. The X-Men decided to give chase and Jubilee convinced Storm to let her and Shogo tag along, as their fates were tied into Arkea’s. On the plane ride over, Jubilee was forced to talk to Sublime and he apologized for scaring her and told her Shogo should be fine now that Arkea was out of him. The team located Arkea in Budapest, right where Jubilee found Shogo. Whilst the rest of the team went to confront Arkea, Jubilee stayed behind in a van to look after Shogo and provide intel on the building they were working their way through. Whilst she was alone, she took the opportunity to search for any records of Shogo’s birth family but she found none. When Arkea was beaten, the group returned to America and Jubilee rejoined the X-Men. [X-Men (4th series) #1-3]

Wolverine decided to re-bond with Jubilee again, so he took her and Shogo to Beverly Hills, where she had lived before she met the X-Men. The two talked about her new motherly role and what it meant for her future. Without Jubilee’s knowledge, Wolverine bought the old house she used to live in before her parents died so that she would still have something to hold on to. [X-Men (4th series) #4]

Jubilee was still very apprehensive about raising a child, given that she was still so young, a vampire and a member of a team that was constantly under attack from a world that hated and feared them. She would get some closure on her feelings from a very unexpected source, though. Not long before, Beast had used a time travel device to bring the original five X-Men to the present to show them what had become of the world. Complicating matters, a group of X-Men claiming to be from the future suddenly appeared and told the present X-Men to send the original five back for the sake of the future. To make things worse, yet another group of time travelers appeared and claimed they were the real X-Men. Amongst the second group was an older, scarred version of Jubilee, now calling herself Wolverine after her mentor. As if that wasn’t shocking enough for the younger Jubilee, she came face to face with a now teenage Shogo, who had donned a suit of armor and was calling himself Sentinel X.

After a lot of side switching and fighting, the situation was sorted out, but not without its casualties. The older version of Jubilee was killed, leaving the future Shogo devastated.

The younger Jubilee took a few moments before he was sent back home to talk to her son and find out what he was like. He told her how strong she would be and how much he loved her. This gave a lot of comfort to the new mother, as she could see that, despite the hardships, it would all work out and he would grow to be a fine young man. After bidding him goodbye, she continued to look after the baby Shogo with a new confidence. [Battle of the Atom crossover]

The good news kept on coming, as Jubilee soon learned that the paperwork for Shogo’s adoption was going through and she would soon be his legal parent.

Only the surprise return of former teammate and rival Monet could break her mood. Monet had been working with X-Factor for the past few years and had decided to stay with the X-Men after the team fell apart. Whilst the two fired some playful barbed comments at each other, Jubilee did seem a little put out when Monet was immediately drafted into the latest X-Men team.

At the time, the team was contending with a newly resurfaced Sisterhood and they had managed to get a hold of an inert sample of Arkea. Jubilee provided intel and logistics to the away team, who were globetrotting in a bid to track down the various members of the Sisterhood. When Arkea managed to find herself a new body, she decided to reactivate some disused Sentinels on the seafloor to distract the X-Men. Jubilee was forced to go into the field with a bunch of students to take out the Sentinels before they endangered any civilians. During the fight, Jubilee displayed her mist powers again to avoid an attack but it took her longer than she anticipated to materialize again, causing her teammates to worry. The squad of students managed to destroy the Sentinels and the rest of the team took Arkea out at the source, ending her threat once and for all.

Whilst all this was going on, Jubilee also had to deal with the unwanted attention of the student Bling!. The young girl had designed a forcefield bubble device for Shogo and took Jubilee’s gratitude the wrong way. She even planted a kiss on the unwitting Jubilee, right in front of Monet no less, and so Jubilee had to let the love struck teenager down gently. [X-Men (4th series) #6-12]

Jubilee’s adoption of Shogo hadn’t gone unnoticed and a man claiming to be his father wanted him back. Calling himself The Future, he broke out of the prison in which he was being kept and began an assault on the X-Men. Injuring a few students, he announced his intentions and said that more would fall unless the X-Men handed Shogo over. Jubilee was adamant that she would never do such a thing and so The Future personally stormed the school to claim what was his. He cornered Jubilee and took Shogo, but when he quickly realized the lengths the X-Men would go to protect one of their own, he changed his plans. Knocking Jubilee out, he took her instead of Shogo and decided to strike a bargain with the X-Men. They would hand Shogo over forever in return for Jubilee. The Future vastly underestimated the X-Men, however, as they turned down his offer and attacked his jungle base. The Future might at first have felt secure, as he had weaponized the plants in the jungle so that they would only respond to the commands of someone from his bloodline. However, Shogo was his biological son, so the X-Men used him to shut down the jungle and Jubilee took the opportunity to break free of her confinement. She went to confront The Future but, when she got there, she found he had been killed by his own weapon. Reunited with her son again, she was relieved that the whole ordeal was over and that she was now his official adoptive mother. [X-Men (4th series) #13-17]

When Wolverine lost his healing factor, he started to look back over his life and those he held dear to him. He decided to take Jubilee and Shogo on a camping trip so he could make sure she was happy. However, things took a dramatic turn when a couple of other campers stumbled on the trio and saw Jubilee in full vampire mode. Thinking that Shogo was in danger, the two campers shot Logan and ran away with the baby.

Jubilee saw red and raced after them, catching up with them when they got to their car. She was prepared to use extreme violence to get her child back but Wolverine managed to stop her doing something she would regret. That didn’t stop her giving the two campers the biggest scare of their life, though. [Wolverine Annual (3rd series) #1]

Jubilee remained on the ad-hoc team of X-Men that Storm had created and she ended up being dragged into space to deal with a situation involving the Sh’iar and Deathbird. After that, she had to meet with the Inhuman queen Medusa, whilst the rest of her team investigated a mysterious sinkhole they thought was linked to the Kree. In the end, it turned out to be a feral form of Krakoa that the team had no option but to destroy for the sake of everyone around it.

When the dust had settled from the Krakoa incident, Jubilee and Storm had a private moment to remember Wolverine, who had recently been killed. Jubilee was struggling with her feelings of loss but she found comfort in talking about him to Storm, one of the only other people who really knew him like she did. [X-Men (4th series) #18-26]
