JUBILEE: Page 8 of 10

BIOGRAPHY - Page 8

Jubilee was soon at a bit of a loose end and, with the rising costs of childcare, she took a job working as an assistant for Patsy Walker, aka Hellcat. She got off to an impressive start when she took on two of Patsy’s ex-boyfriends and a hell demon who came to cause trouble. [Patsy Walker aka Hellcat #8-10]

That was just the beginning of the adventures hanging out with Patsy, as Jubilee soon found herself squaring up against Black Cat and her newly assembled team. Hellcat was injured in the fight with her, causing Jubilee’s vampire urges to kick into overdrive at the sight of fresh blood. Fortunately, she managed to hold back her bloodlust long enough to get to some pre-packed blood before she hurt her new friends. Black Cat proved to be a trickier opponent than Jubilee first realized, as she was able to use some specially designed claws to magically brainwash anyone she cut. Hellcat came up with a plan to deal with the vindictive thief and Jubilee’s ability to turn into a mist was critical in grabbing the claws off Black Cat. Soon after, Patsy came into a lot of money and decided to close up her business, meaning Jubilee was out of a job again. [Patsy Walker aka Hellcat #11-17]

Not long after, Dracula returned and sent out a psychic call for all his kind to come to him. Jubilee was powerless to stop herself and she travelled to Romania to be with her master. Old Man Logan, an alternate time-displaced version of Wolverine, was alerted to her disappearance and tracked her down to Dracula’s castle. Unable to stop herself from doing Dracula’s bidding, she lured Logan into a trap where Dracula managed to bite and infect him. Seeing her friend in distress caused Jubilee to fight back against Dracula’s influence, and the intervention of the Howling Commandos caused enough of a distraction for her to come to her senses.

She and Logan attacked Dracula, killing him (albeit temporarily). Afterwards, she got the chance to sit down with the alternate Logan and tell him the things she wished she had said to her own version before he died. [Old Man Logan (2nd series) #14-15]

Jubilee soon returned to the X-Men, who had now set up base in Central Park and had re-opened the school for more students again. [X-Men: Prime (2nd series) oneshot]

Encouraged by Kitty, who was now the headmistress of the school, Jubilee was given a group of students to mentor. It was an eclectic bunch, consisting of Quentin Quire, Bling!, Eye-Boy and a new student called Hindsight amongst others. Quentin in particular proved to be a difficult student as his ego would often cause him to clash with the rest of the group, Jubilee included. In the first day, Quentin managed to destroy a chunk of the school after getting into a fight, just as Hindsight arrived for his induction. Jubilee found herself trying to convince the young boy to stay but the stakes were quickly raised when the Purifiers decided to attack just at that moment. Her main goal was to protect the students and nearby civilians, but she soon had to protect the Purifiers when Quentin almost made them shoot each other. After subduing most of the Purifiers and getting a rein on her students, she got to unleash her rage on the last remaining Purifier, showing him what an angry vampire-mutant can do. After it was all over, she gathered her class and told them some harsh truths. Not every mutant would be on the X-Men and it was her job to give her students the best education in real-world application of their powers. This disappointed a number of them, Quentin and Bling! especially, who aired their displeasure at seemingly being sidelined. Despite the stress of the new job, Jubilee did find support with Chamber, with whom she was growing close once more, as he had taken a shine to Shogo, often helping her out with babysitting duties. [Generation X (2nd series) #1-2]

The students proved to be as troublesome as Jubilee was when she was their age, going as far as sneaking out at night to hunt the person who had attacked another student. When Jubilee realized what they were up to she managed to find them just in time as they were battling her former teammate, Monet. Jubilee was stunned to see Monet was now under the influence of Emplate once again, and she was forced to attack her friend to save her students. The fight was brief as Monet, now going by M-Plate, teleported away, leaving Jubilee and the students to wonder what she was planning. Bling! had been seriously injured by M-Plate during the fight but, when Jubilee spoke to her, the young girl lashed out. Bling! told her that her aim was to become one of the X-Men, and Jubilee’s speech the other day discouraging them from that path upset her. Bling! had a very visible mutation and she saw no way she could live amongst the humans without being constantly discriminated against. It was Chamber who managed to calm the young girl down, but afterwards Jubilee aired her concerns to him about the situation, as well as the fact M-Plate was apparently stalking them all too. [Generation X (2nd series) #3-4]

Jubilee began to settle into the role of mentor and started training the students to be effective with their powers in a variety of ways. She and Chamber were also growing close, as they would often patrol Central Park together looking for M-Plate. Seeing Monet succumb to Emplate’s influence caused Jubilee to draw parallels with her own vampirism. She began to wallow in self-pity about it all but Chamber managed to perk her up again. [Generation X (2nd series) #5-7]

Not long after, the living island of Krakoa tunneled its way underneath New York looking for Quentin and, in doing so, caused a small earthquake. Jubilee was with Bling! at the Natural History Museum at the time, and the earthquake caused the floor to give way. The two found themselves in the tunnels under the city, but Jubilee was severely injured, as she had been impaled by some rebar. The relationship between Bling! and Jubilee has been strained for a number of weeks, but now the two of them were forced to rely on each other to navigate the tunnels.

Jubilee’s vampirism meant her wounds would heal at a fast rate, but her body was now craving blood to compensate for what she had lost. As the two navigated the tunnels they found M-Plate’s lair, with numerous dead bodies lying around. They managed to find a survivor, but they were also in bad shape, causing Jubilee’s vampiric urges to get stronger. Realizing that M-Plate was near caused Bling! to have a panic attack, giving Jubilee the opportunity to calm her down and form a bond with her. Knowing that she couldn’t hold her bloodlust back much longer, Jubilee convinced Bling! to take the survivor to safety, far away from her. Once she was alone, she got another piece of rebar and impaled her hand to the wall, causing her mind to focus on the pain as opposed the overwhelming urge to feed. The plan worked and they were all rescued by Chamber, Husk and the students, but Jubilee was growing weaker by the minute. Chamber offered up his own blood for Jubilee to feed upon but, as she bit down on his arm, Shogo saw and was scared by it. The young boy wouldn’t go near Jubilee, devasting the young woman. [Generation X (2nd series) #8-9]

Shogo wouldn’t let Jubilee do anything for him and so she had to ask Chamber for help with the toddler. To make matters worse, Quentin had travelled with Krakoa to the middle of the Atlantic and refused to come back to the school. When she was venting to Chamber about all her troubles, she kissed him in the spur of the moment, but immediately left before he could tell her he felt the same. She took the X-jet, travelled to Quentin’s makeshift desert island and attempted to talk the boy into returning to the school. Quentin had recently gained a small fragment of the Phoenix Force, and now declared that he was too good for the school. As she was trying to convince him to return, she suddenly got a message that the school had apparently vanished, along with everyone in it. Knowing that M-Plate was to blame, she gave up on Quentin and returned to the X-jet. Despite pretending he didn’t care, Quentin followed her and the two returned to New York to find the school had miraculously reappeared again, but M-Plate was now attacking the students. Jubilee confronted her, but M-Plate ripped off her magical amulet and threw her through the window into the bright sunlight. Without the amulet for protection, Jubilee began to burn up whilst everyone watched on in horror. Knowing that she was the only person who would vouch for him, Quentin used up the fragment of the Phoenix and purged the vampirism from her as well as reignited her mutant powers.

Everyone stood aghast at what had just happened, as fireworks started to spark from Jubilee’s hands. She didn’t get much time to revel in the good fortune as M-Plate continued her attack on the students. Armed with her powers once again, Jubilee and M-Plate fought, and she was soon joined by Chamber and Husk, with all three drawing their former friend to a standstill. When M-Plate drained the powers of Hindsight, she gained the ability to see the memories of whomever she touched. Spurred on by this new development, Jubilee called upon everyone to touch M-Plate, inundating her with their memories. Emplate’s hold over Monet began to weaken until he was expelled from his sister’s body. When he tried to jump back into her again, Jubilee unleashed her powers on his, causing him to flee to him dimension once again.

In the aftermath, Jubilee realized she had to adapt to being alive once again, but fortunately Chamber was right there for her, with the two rekindling their relationship again. [Generation X (2nd series) #85-87]

As well as dealing with her powers returning, Jubilee was soon drafted into helping investigate the return of some of her friends. After travelling the planet trying to figure out how and why Jean Grey returned to life [Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey #1-5], things got more personal when Wolverine’s body went missing. Not knowing if he had come back to life again, or someone had simply stolen his body, the X-Men quickly divided their forces to scour every possible connection that may lead them to an answer. Jubilee joined up with Storm, Rogue and Psylocke amongst others, and travelled to Madripoor to go through Logan’s old haunts and former acquaintances to see if they had heard anything. Naturally things didn’t go to plan and the group fell afoul of Viper and the Femme Fatales. Jubilee, Domino and Kitty managed to escape whilst the others were captured, leaving the trio to find a way to break them out. After going undercover around Madripoor, Jubilee found out where the others were being held and they broke them free, putting an end to Viper’s scheming. The group returned to the mansion without finding any evidence of whether Wolverine was alive or dead. [Hunt for Wolverine #1, Hunt for Wolverine: Mystery in Madripoor #1-4]
