The Advocates Squad

Little has been revealed about the students in Rogue’s squad. They were briefly shown observing a training session in the Danger Room. Rogue’s squad was seen wearing yellow and black uniforms similar to those worn by the original X-Men and New Mutants. The name of the Squad and its members were revealed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13. Seemingly, they were all depowered in M-Day, as none were seen among the remaining students. Some, if not all, may have subsequently been murdered when William Stryker bombed the bus carrying the depowered students from the Institute. If this is the case, they may have potentially been revived on Krakoa. Had Rogue's squad survived this cull, some of them may have opted to go through Crucible to regain their powers or may be living lives as normal humans again. [New X-Men: Academy X #20-24] The Advocates were not included in the yearbook one-shot.

First appearance: Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #444

Instructor:

Rogue (Anna Marie Raven)

First appearance: Avengers Annual (1st series) #10

Powers: metabolize someone's essence at a remote distance, incapacitating them while absorbing and duplicating their memories, skills and special powers.

Notes:

  • Rogue has not mentioned her squad since their initial appearance and eventual disbanding (and implied deaths). However, later on, she did take somewhat of a mentorship role with some of the other remaining students (Bling, Trance and Indra).

Members:

Boggart (Robin Wise)

Powers: Enhanced Strength

Notes:

  • In English folklore, a Boggart is a mythological creature similar to a gremlin or sprite that resides in bogland/marshes. Possibly this name was used to indicate that Boggart was British and/or it was a reference to his green skin and elven-like ears.

Naiad (Aurelie Sabayon)

Powers: Breathes underwater

Notes:

  • A Naiad was a type of a type of water nymph from Greek Mythology who lived close to rivers/wells/springs inland. It seems likely this is a nod to her dual nature.
  • Interestingly, Naiad's surname is an anglicized version of a traditional wine/egg-based Italian desert called zabaione or zabaglione.
  • Her mother phoned the school in Decimation: House of X #1, concerned for her well-being

Trovão (Pedro de Noli)

Powers: Generation of sonic booms

Notes:

  • Given both his real name and “mutant” name, he was likely of Portuguese ancestry.
  • "Trovão" means Thunder in Portuguese.

Xenon (Shaun Kennedy)

Powers: Generation of light blasts

Notes:

  • Xenon is a type of noble gas/chemical that can be used in modern lighting equipment.

Pinpoint (Gerard Cooper)

Powers: long range telescopic vision

Umbra (Patrick Nesbitt)

Powers: Unspecified ability to control darkness

Notes:

  • Umbra is a Latin word meaning shade/shadow. It also represented a type of ghost in Greek mythology.
