Noteworthy Faculty

The majority of the Institute's faculty were members of the X-Men, though there were a few exceptions which are listed on this page.

Downing, Alicia

Position: Guidance Counselor
First appearance: X-Men Unlimited (2nd series) #10

Powers: Unknown

Notes:

  • Ms. Downing was introduced while she was tendering her resignation as the guidance counselor of the Xavier Institute. She was furious, claiming that one of the students had done something to her, though what exactly is unclear (she was covered in white spots but this may have been a mutation of some sort). When Beast tried to placate her, she said she was scared what she might do if she remained and that the children were “little monsters.” Contextually, this appeared to be a reference to their behavior, though, as opposed to any kind of prejudice due to their mutant nature.
  • Beast temporarily filled in her position following her resignation with very mixed results.
  • At least one student, Protozoa, seemed particularly fond of her and was upset by her resignation and the implication was that he was going to see her about the bullying he was receiving from another student, Cudgel.

Ghazikhanian, Annie

Role: School Nurse
First appearance: Uncanny X-Men (1st series) 411

Powers: baseline human

Notes:

  • Nurse Annie was introduced by Chuck Austen, the mother of a young telepathic boy, Carter. She was tending to ill/amnesiac Alex Summers when the X-Men came into her life. The relationship was unhealthy, with Annie having fantasies about her patient. When Alex was reunited with the X-Men, Annie went with them along with Carter to the Institute, taking the role as the school nurse at Xavier's insistence. While at the Institute, Annie did form a close friendship with Northstar, briefly dated Iceman and heavily dated Havok. It was later revealed that Carter had been responsible for her and Havok's fantasies about each other, as he wanted his mother to be happy as she was lonely.
  • Annie left the Institute due to concerns about her son's safety, saying goodbye solely to her love rival, Polaris, asking her to take care of Alex in her absence.
  • An ongoing mystery surrounding Annie was the identity of her mysterious ex/father of Carter. It was stated that he had been abusive and that he had been a mutant, causing a prejudice to develop in Annie which she grappled with in story. On the Mar 18, 2023, episode of the "Cerebro podcast," Chuck Austen clarified that as some fans suspected his intention was for Magneto to be Annie's ex/Carter's father but the idea was upheld by editorial.
  • Annie was of Armenian descent.

Hannah, Marilyn

Role: Canteen Worker
First appearance: Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #429

Powers: Marilyn had four arms

Notes:

  • Marilyn was part of the school's canteen staff. She was murdered by Black Tom Cassidy when he and an incarnation of the Brotherhood attacked the school.
  • She appeared to have a frienship with Northstar. He reccounted to Black Tom Cassidy her past history, that she was named after Marilyn Monroe and that she had been accepted by her mother after her mutation developed.
  • Her appearance was wildly different between Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #429 and X-Men (2nd series) #164. While this was likely an aritst error/choice, it could have indicated some sort of shapeshifting ability.
  • Full name revealed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13.

Yamamoto, Sanji

Role: Cook
First appearance: Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #429

Powers: Rodent like appearrance

Notes:

  • Real name revealed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13.
  • He only appearranced once.

Corsi, Tom

Role: Physical Education Teacher
First appearance: New Mutants (1st series) #19

Powers: None

Notes:

  • Tom Corsi was introduced in the original New Mutants series. He was mystically turned Native American during the New Mutants battle with the Demon Bear. [New Mutants (1st series) #19-20] Eventually, he got a job at the Institute, being unable to return to his life as a police officer. [New Mutants (1st series) #35-36] When the X-Men set up the Generation X team, he also joined the faculty. [Generation X (1st series) #52], so it wasn't all that suprising that he joined (off panel) the faculty as the Phys. Ed teacher during this generation. [New Mutants (2nd series) #7]

Mexer, Andre

Role: Janitor
First appearance: Wolverine: Saudade #1

Powers: Telekinesis

Notes:

  • Andre Mexer was a young Brazillian mutant whom Wolverine met on holiday. He had planned to bring him back to the Institute to enroll as a student but the poor boy was targeted by the villain Kuhrra Daizonest and lobotomized. A decision was made to make him the janitor.
  • When the Institute closed, Andre was brought to the Jean Grey School to serve as their janitor.

Unclear Status

Garrison, Dr, Sean

Role: School Therapist
First appearance: New Mutants (2nd series) #4

Powers: release pheromones from his skin that alter the behavior of people around him

Notes:

  • Sean Garrision is the father of Wallflower, though she was unaware. Wallflower's mother Gail stated that Sean used his powers on her to make her to fall in love with her. She became immune to his powers while pregnant with Laurie and she fled.
  • A celebrity, he was known on the talkshow circuit and his public support for mutant rights. He had some well-known patients, like Diamondback and the Blob.
  • He was hired by Emma Frost to treat Wither for his issues following his accidental killing of his father. Emma deemed this as a success (at the time) and asked Garrison to accept a position at the school (possibly Ms. Downings vacant post or a variation of it). Initially, he declined but, becoming aware that his daughter was at the school, he accepted.
  • Clearly, he was being built up as a series big bad (the potential of which was glimpsed in the House of M reality) but this never came to fruition, as he was never seen starting his role in the school. Some in-story scenarios would explain this such as A) he was depowered in M-Day B) post M-Day he may have considered the school too dangerous C) his daughter was killed shortly after M-Day and this may have negated his reason for taking the position D) some combination or A through C.
