New Mutants Squad

The New Mutants were one of several training squads established at the Xavier Institute. Several of their members were recruited directly by Danielle Moonstar and became a close-knit group of friends in their first semester at Xavier’s. They all selected Dani Moonstar as their faculty advisor and she continued in that capacity when the squad system was established and the group of friends became a team. Moonstar named her group The New Mutants after the team she was a part of when she attended Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The team’s colors were gold, silver-grey and white. These characters were largely the central figures of New Mutants (2nd series) and remained key figures during the New X-Men: Academy days. Their spotlight faded over time with the most prominent roles going to Prodigy and Elixir. The others had more minor appearances before and during the Krakoa era.

First appearance: New X-Men: Academy X #2 (squad officially announced)

Former Members: Wither (see Hellions)

Instructor:

Mirage (Danielle Moonstar)

First Appearance: Marvel Graphic Novel #4

Powers: generate psi-plasma to empathically scan minds, project psionic holograms plucked from the brains of others, and create energy weapons that overstimulate and disable neurochemistry, psychic link to all higher animals.

Notes:

  • Mirage was very much the POV character for the New Mutants (2nd series). In many ways, the series showcased her moving into a leadership role as a mentor to the next generation.

Members

Elixir (Joshua Foley)

First appearance: New Mutants (2nd series) #5

Powers: produce bio-molecular energy at will to affect organic matter he touches, allowing him to heal physical damage done to his body or the bodies of others, reactivate suppressed mutant abilities, repair cerebral functions, and alter the composition of his own molecules in certain ways

Notes:

  • Josh was a mutant-hater and a recruit for Donald Pierce’s Reavers when he suddenly manifested his powers.
  • Elixir is from Flushing, New York. [New X-Men (2nd series) #1]
  • After being critically injured by Wolfsbane, Josh used his healing powers on himself. However, not only was his health restored but his skin also turned golden. [New Mutants (2nd series) #12]
  • Josh has been classified as having Omega level mutant potential with his healing powers.
  • Josh is the legal ward of Danielle Moonstar as well as one of her advisees.
  • Josh survived M-Day but it was very traumatic for him as Moonstar was forced to leave the Institute and Wallflower was killed in his arms by a sniper.
  • He became a reluctant part of an incarnation of X-Force post Second Coming and actually killed his former love rival Wither in combat, overpowering his death abilities with his healing powers during the events of Necrosha.
  • In the Krakoan age, Josh became part of the Five and along with Hope Summers, Proteus, Tempus and Goldballs, the quintet were responsible for resurrecting dead mutants. The role made him somewhat of a celebrity among his people. After the events of the Hellfire Gala, Josh's present status is somewhat ambigious.
  • In his Yearbook entry, he was voted most athletic. He listed his likes as baseball, basketball, frisbee and video games. He tried to have his dislike be listed as a person but this was forbidden by the yearbook. At the time, he was fighting with Prodigy.
  • Josh is a fan of the bands Blink-182 and Ataris. Both American punk rock bands who were at their peak in the late 90s/early 00s. [New Mutants (2nd series) #7]

Icarus (Joshua “Jay” Guthrie)

First appearance: ROM Annual #3

Powers: voice is capable of producing sonic frequency beyond the range of human capability as well as creating multiple sounds or voices at once, extensive regenerative powers allow him to recover from even fatal injuries, red feathered wings on his back allow him to fly

Notes:

  • Joshua’s older siblings are Cannonball and Husk, both of whom have followed Xavier’s cause for years.
  • Jay’s vocal powers were hinted at long before he sprouted his wings. [New Mutants (1st series) #42] He kept his mutant powers a secret until his wings made his mutant status obvious.
  • Jay’s true love was killed by her own father when he discovered she was dating a mutant.
  • He stopped using the name Joshua, instead going by the nickname “Jay” now, partially to demonstrate that, with his lover’s death, one important phase in his life has come to an end.
  • Jay joined arrived at the Xavier Institute in New X-Men: Academy X #1.
  • Jay was briefly a member of the Hellions squad but switched to the New Mutants after refusing to help the Hellions confront federal agents who were sent to apprehend Kevin Ford, aka Wither.
  • Icarus was killed post M-Day by William Stryker but was resurrected in the Krakoan age as seen in X-Men (5th series) #7.
  • In his yearbook entry, he listed his likes as playing the guitar and, to no one's suprise, he was voted "most musical" by his peers. His dislikes were "shallow people."
  • Icarus joined a swing dancing class with Wind Dancer in New X-Men (2nd series) #12.

Prodigy III (David Alleyne)

First appearance: New Mutants (2nd series) #4

Powers: psychomimetic power allows him to subconsciously scan and internalize the knowledge and skills of others, giving him the ability to duplicate any non-superhuman talent possessed by those nearby

Notes:

  • David first met Karma when she was still working as a librarian in Chicago.
  • While he had no intention of becoming a super-hero, David joined Xavier’s school to protect his family from anti-mutant violence.
  • David has a younger sister named Kim and came to see his roommate, Josh, as sort of a little brother, who needed to be watched over since he was constantly getting in trouble.
  • David co-led the New Mutants with Sofia.
  • Prodigy was depowered during M-Day but made the decision to remain at the Institute.
  • He later joined an incarnation of the Young Avengers (2nd series) where his bisexuality was revealed.
  • During the events of X-Factor (4th series) it was revealed that he had been murdered by a serial killer who targeted queer men of color and was resurrected in the same series. Prodigy was a lead in the title, with his powers making him a natural detective.
  • He was successful in being voted in as an X-Man in the third Hellfire Gala, only to be immediately killed by Nimrod. His return occurred in the Dead X-Men series.
  • Prodigy has embarked on a relationship with Speed of the Young Avengers. Interestingly, he also dated Surge, herself another speedster.
  • Prodigy had a crush on his advisor, Dani Moonster. He admitted it in New X-Men (2nd series) #10. Moonstar made it very clear that, while she was flattered, nothing would happen between them.
  • In his yearbook entry, he was voted most likely to succeed by his peers. His dislikes were cheaters and his likes were the Chicago Cubs and jazz music. He had a poster of famous jazz saxophonists, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker, on the wall in his dorm room. [New Mutants (2nd series) #6]

Surge IV (Noriko Ashida)

First appearance: New Mutants (2nd series) #8

Powers: siphon off nearby levels of electrical energy, including static electricity and mechanical power sources, in order to build a charge that she can convert into bursts of superhuman speed, project as electrostatic blasts from her hands or radiate from all sides, wears stabilizer gauntlets that regulate her power flow

Notes:

  • Surge is from Toyko, Japan. [New X-Men (2nd series) #1]
  • Noriko ran away from her family and was living in the streets of Salem Center. She used drugs to hold her unstable powers in check.
  • While still living on the streets, Noriko accidentally injured Luna, the waitress at the coffee shop that the New Mutants regularly patronized. Noriko even stole from Luna. Nori brielfy worked at the coffee shop to work off her debt.
  • Her roommate was Afghani-born mutant Dust. The two did not get along that well, their differing views on women’s role in society created friction between them every now and then. Over time, they did develop mutual respect.
  • Post M-Day, Emma Frost made Surge the leader of the remaining students. The burden of this role did take a toll and at one point she did seek out advice from her former mentor, Moonstar, in X-Men: Divided We Stand #2
  • She was a candidate for the second Krakoan X-Men team but lost to Firestar. Bling! was also nominated in the promotional comic strips and the two teens commiserated that they had split the teen vote.
  • In her yearbook entry, Surge listed her likes as music, dislikes as the general public and she was voted "class rebel."
  • In New X-Men Academy #2, Surge was loudly listening to Liz Phair's song “Extraordinary” in her bedroom while decorating. Phair is an American born singer songwriter who primarily works in the genre of “indie rock.” The song “Extraordinary” was from Phair's fourth self-titled album.
  • After a distressing phone call with her father in New X-Men Academy #7, Surge was listening to Eminem's song “Sing for the Moment” on her headphones. Eminem is American rapper who has great success internationally. Sing for the moment was the final single release from the album the Enimen Show. The Enimen show was the best selling album in America in 2002.

Wallflower (Laurie Collins)

First appearance: New Mutants (2nd series) #2

Powers: releases highly-potent airborne pheromones that affect the chemical balance in other people, creating responses to her presence like terror, anger, and physical attraction

Notes:

  • Laurie was born in Kent, Conneticut. [New X-Men (2nd series) #1]
  • Laurie inherited her mutant powers from her father, who used them to seduce her mother. Once pregnant with Laurie, his powers no longer worked on her and she left him, never to have a relationship with another man ever again. Toward the end of Weir/DeFillipis run, they were building her father Sean Garrison as a big villain for the series but the plotline was dropped with the new creative team and he was never seen again.
  • An accident at her high school “outed” her powers to her classmates, causing her to transfer to Xavier’s school. However, with her powers severely not under control, she was very shy and withdrawn form the other students, an outsider among outcasts.
  • Sofia made a perfect roommate for her since her wind powers could prevent her from being manipulated by Laurie’s pheromones. She had been roommates with Angel and Loa but both pairings failed due to Laurie's powers.
  • It was revealed in New Mutants (2nd series) #11 that Laurie in error blamed her pheromone powers for the riot in the Xavier Institute caused by Quentin Quire's Omega gang.
  • Wallflower had two suitors, Elixir and Wither, though she seemed to favor Elixir. The two briefly dated until his affair with Wolfsbane was revealed.
  • After M-Day, Laurie was assasinated by Risman of the Purifers and her body was later used by the Kaga in his experiments and turned into a bio-sentinel. [Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #31]
  • She was seen as resurrected, among her former classmates in X-Factor (4th series) #5.
  • In her yearbook entry, she stated that she disliked public speaking and therefore it was not a suprise her peers named her the "shyest" student. She also listed her like as puzzles/reading.
  • Wallflower wore a Mars Volta t-shirt in New Mutants (2nd series) #6. The Mars Volta are a Mexican-American progressive rock band from El Paso, Texas. Their big hit was "The Widow" in 2005.

Wind Dancer (Sophia Mantega-Barrett)

First appearance: New Mutants (2nd series) #1

Powers: mentally direct air particles, allowing her to draw far-off sounds to her ears, disrupt the equilibrium of others with compressed air, lift herself off the ground, and create isolated whirlwinds or directed blasts of high pressure air

Notes:

  • Sofia’s mother was accidentally killed by rival gangs in Caracas, Venezuela. Sofia was sent to live in America with her father, Walter Barrett, who knew nothing about her. He placed her in a private school and forbade her to use her powers but, at one point, she rebelled and destroyed one of his super-market stores to gain his attention.
  • Sofia co-led the New Mutants together with David.
  • She was depowered on M-Day and joined a now-defunct version of the New Warriors, which was populated with other depowered mutants using confiscated villain tech.
  • Sofia was murdered in X-Factor (4th series) #5 on Mojoworld but was resurrected along with her powers a short time later by the Five. As part of a truce, she was later made Krakoa's ambassador to Mojoworld in X-Factor (4th series) #9.
  • Prior to her murder she was a successful internet streamer and she used her skills to head up the PR department of X-Corp.
  • Sofia loves to dance. [New Mutants (2nd series) #3] She went to a local swing dancing class with Icarus as her partner in New X-Men (2nd series) #12.
  • In her yearbook entry, Sofia was voted most outgoing. She listed her likes as dancing, flying and the wind and ever the optimist, Sofia opted not to name any dislikes.
