Lower School
Only students over the age of fifteen were inducted as part of a training squad. Those students who were too young to participate in this level of training were taught in the Institute’s “lower school.” Since the younger students in the “Lower School” had not yet been assigned to training squads, they likely did not yet have assigned codenames either. These students were advised by Xi’an Coy Manh, aka Karma. who served as the Institute’s librarian.
Only three students were revealed as being part of the Lower School, however several other likely members are referenced in the miscenallous section.
First appearance: New X-Men: Academy X #9
Garrett, Jeffrey
First appearance: X-Treme X-Men #20
Powers: organically defined teleportation power is able to produce a transportation effect that is only capable of displacing living matter
Notes:
- Jeffrey was introduced in the pages of X-Treme X-Men (1st series), where Storm's team were tracking him as he was the believed perpetrator of a mass murder, which included his entire family. It was later revealed he had been mind-controlled by the sadistic telepath Elias Bogan to commit the crimes. After he was freed from Bogan's influence, he remained in the mansion. This became a point of contention between Storm's group and Xavier's, as Storm felt even if Jeffrey was innocent he should face trial, whereas Xavier/Emma/Jean thought this was unfair, as given the climate he would never have received a fair trial.
- Jeffrey Garrett's death occurred behind the scenes due to events depicted in New X-Men (1st series) #147 and was fully revealed in New X-Men: Academy X #7. He remained at the school as a ghost.
- It is possible that his astral essence somehow survived his physical death in the same fashion that other mutants have transferred their “essence” following their death or major physical trauma (Jean Grey, Emma Frost) or survived as a purely psionic force (Shadow King, Malice).
- In his initial appearances, Jeffrey seemed a bit older than in his post-death appearances. He was also romantically linked with Andrea Margulies, aka Rubbermaid of Alpha Squadron.
- After M-Day, Jeffrey disappeared and his death was confirmed in X-Men Unlimited Infinity Comic #100 when he was resurrected through Krakoan Protocols a week before the infamous third Hellfire Gala. In the same issue, it was confirmed that he had been 14 at the time of his death.
- Jeffrey had a close friendship with Surge during his time as a "ghost."
