Please find a below breakdown of all named students that were never confirmed to be part of any particular official squad.
Aero (Guthrie, Melody)
First appearance: New Mutants (1st series) #42 (unconfirmed)
Powers: radiant energy aura enabling her to fly
Notes:
- Melody is the younger sister of X-Men Husk and Cannonball.
- She was depowered during M-Day but regained her powers after going through the “Crucible.”
- During her time as a “depowered” mutant, Melody worked at a youth camp called “Camp Gloriana.” She organized a visit to the camp from Storm, who referred to her as her “former student.” This likely was just a reference to Melody being a former student of the Institute. However, another reading could be that it could imply that Melody was part of Storm's unnamed training squad, as it was never revealed that Storm actually taught any classes during this period.
Audio (Keyes, Raymond)
First appearance: New X-Men (2nd series) #1
Powers
: Wide Frequency hearing
Notes:
- Audio was a “background” character, never spoke and was only named in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13. Presumably, he was depowered after M-Day. His fate is unknown.
Basilisk (Columbus, Mike)
First appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #135
Powers: produces narrow-band photonic energy from his single eye, controlled by a mechanical implant to produce strobe pulses of light that temporarily paralyze anyone caught in its glare
Notes:
- Basilisk was killed by Xorn I/”Magneto,” who used excessive force to prove a point while under the influence of Kick. [New X-Men (1st series) #149] He has not reappeared.
Beak (Bohusk, Barnell)
First appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #117
Powers: animal mutation gives him heightened vision, agility, and reaction time, a pointed beak, and feathered wings that fold up along his forearms or extend to allow limited flight
Notes:
- Beak received a commendation at the Institute’s first prize-giving ceremony for his heroism.
- Beak became romantically involved with his classmate Angel Salvatore and she became pregnant. They had at least six offspring, who all possess both bird-like and fly-like physical characteristics to varying degrees.
- Beak was drafted into the group of dimension-hopping mutants known as the Exiles. He proved instrumental in unraveling the truth behind the team’s mysterious “sponsor,” the Timebroker. During a caper, he found himself back on Earth-616 during the House of M wave and was depowered along with Angel Salvatore during M-Day.
- The couple briefly served as members of a new team of “New Warriors,” which were made up of other depowered mutants, before retiring to family life. He was repowered during the “Mothervine” event and eventually he and his family went to live in Krakoa after the murder of his parents by anti-mutant terrorists. His whereabouts, along with that of his family, is unknown.
Blindfold (Aldine, Ruth)
First appearance: Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #7
Powers: blind psychic possessing telepathic, clairvoyant and precognitive powers
Notes:
- Blindfold was first mentioned in Astonishing X-Men (3rd series) #4.
- She is allegedly descended from occasional X-Men foe, Destiny.
- She was born in North Carolina. A visible mutant at birth, as she had no eyes. Her father quickly abandoned the family. This caused her mother to work mutiple jobs and she was left with her brother. Her brother deeply resented her and was abusive. Eventually, he became addicted to drugs and later was “born again” in the church. All this led to further abusive behaviour towards Ruth. At one point, her mother intervened and he killed her. Her brother Luca was sent to death row and Ruth was sent to live with an aunt. This was a very peaceful period in her life. At the time he was executed, Luca was unaware that he was also a mutant. Ruth attended the execution and he attacked her psychically as his body died. Her aunt made the decision to enroll her in Xavier Institute after. Luca came back as a psionic entity and was the main antagonist in X-Men Legacy (2nd series).
- Blindfold has had an on and off again relationship with Professor X's son Legion originating in the aformentioned X-Men Legacy (2nd series).
- She was part of the spin-off team Young X-Men.
- She has a good friendship with Cipher.
- Online sources state that Blindford was part of Kitty Pryde's Paladins. While this may have been the intention, this was not confirmed in the text.
- In a shocking turn of events, Blindfold committed suicide in Uncanny X-Men (5th series) #11 during a particularly bleak period in mutant history. She was eventually resurrected on Krakoa and reunited with Legion in the Legion of X series. So far, she has only been seen in astral form, claiming that she opted to forego a body following her resurrection.
Bronson, Spencer
First Appearance: Mystique #11
Powers: telepath who can only control men
Notes:
- Depowered in M-Day, as not seen among the students who had retained their powers. His fate is unknown.
- His mother had contacted Charles Xavier's school as her son had telepathically controlled his father and he was now refusing to see her. Charles dispatched Mystique (who was in his employ at the time) and Forge to retrieve the boy. He displayed a psychopathic/sociopathic streak and commanded Forge to kill Mystique, though he was eventually subdued and was being sent to the Institute for training. It was confirmed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13 that he did ultimately attend the school.
- He appeared quite young and may have been assigned to Karma's lower school.
Butterfly (Priest, Lucy)
First Appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #131
Powers: Flight/insect wings
Notes:
- Depowered in M-Day, as not seen among the students who had retained their powers. Her fate is unknown.
- Lucy was part of Warren Washington's flight class.
- She was somewhat of a “mean-girl” and mocked Beak's appearance and implied that Angel Salvatore was a slut.
- She was named in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13.
Caput (Verne, Abraham)
First appearance: New Mutants (2nd series) #7
Powers: living energy animating skeleton
Notes:
- Caput was another no line “background character” who was named in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13
- He was likely depowered during M-Day, his fate is unknown.
- In New Mutants (2nd series) #7, he was seen with a man during parents day, presumably his father. So, despite his physical mutation, he seemed to have some sort of close family connection.
Cephalopod (Stanwick, Molly)
First appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #117
Powers: green skin, octopus tentacles instead of legs
Notes:
- She debuted in New X-Men (1st series) #117 but did not speak. She was later a supporting character in the Chamber miniseries.
- Some online sources have cited that Cephalopod has resurfaced in the pages of X-Force (6th series) and Wolverine (7th series) but this appears to a younger different character, as she lacks Cephalopod green skin, and had tentacled legs instead having tentacled arms, which Cephalopod did not have.
- She was likely depowered during M-Day, her fate is unknown.
- She may have also had the ability to petrify targets, based on a comment by Chamber in Chamber #1, though this may have been a bad pun.
Cerebella (Johansson, Martha)
First appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #118
Powers: telepath, capable of thought projection, influencing and manipulating the minds of others, casting telepathic chaff to disrupt thoughts and powers
Notes:
- Martha was an early victim of the U-Men, a fanatical group of mutant-wannabes who sought to create a “third species” by illegally harvesting mutant body parts and transplanting them into their members. Her mutant brain was kept alive and used until being rescued by the X-Men.
- Prior to becoming disembodied, Martha ran away from home. She left a note, written in her own luminous blood.
- In her first appearance, it was mentioned she was a fan of heavy metal music.
- Her original codename was “No-Girl” as a reference to her lack of a body.
- She has a close friendship with fellow student Ernst.
- In the Krakoan age, she finally got her body back in New Mutants (4th series) #24. It was quite the journey getting there. In X-Men: Curse of the Mutants - X-Men Vs. Vampires #1, while in telepathic possesion of Rogue's body, a vampire offered to sire her so she could retain it permanently; she declined. Her brain was put in a cloned body of Storm's in Spider-Man and the X-Men #1-6 thanks to Mr. Sinister but it was temporary, as Ernst was forced to rip her out of it. In one of the more bizarre events, she formed a love interest with the Generation Hope [#13-17] member, Zero, who could create a body for her through his own flesh. She ended the relationship when she realized he was insane.
- She had another love interest in Eye-Boy before the restoration of her body.
Choir (Irina Clayton)
First appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #119
Powers: three extra mouths on her neck allow her to speak with multiple voices and cast her voice so that it appears to be coming from different locations
Notes:
- Irina was first shown in New X-Men (1st series) #119. Her first name and powers were revealed in New X-Men (1st series) #120. Her full name and mutant name were revealed in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13.
- Choir was seen in Legion of X #9 with her powers restored. Whether that means she went through Crucible or was resurrected by the Five and she was victim of Styker's bombing remains unclear.
Cipher (Tager, Alisa)
First Appearance: Young X-Men #2
Powers & Abilities: dimensional displacement alters her imprint on reality, letting her become selectively invisible, inaudible, intangible, and undetectable by other electromagnetic or psionic means
Notes:
- Cipher was retroactively added to this generation of students in the Young X-Men series. Her backstory was expanded and it was revealed that she was recruited by Jean Grey, Cyclops and Xorn in New X-Men (1st series) #127. Cyclops initially opted to use her as a spy, given that she was virtually undetectable. Her backstory was expanded in Young X-Men #10 and it was revealed that she played a hand in the events of Messiah Complex, Astonishing X-Men and earlier events in the X-Men series.
- Once her identity was revealed, she joined the background players of the X-Men and was recently seen on Krakoa.
Collider (Pringle, James)
First Appearance: Generation M #4
Powers: alchemical transmutator, preternatural inner glow which possibly gave him some innate charisma.
Notes:
- Depowered on M-Day.
- James was 17 when his powers developed while his twin, named Jim, was a human. His brother Jim was a high achiever, whereas James was slacker. However, thanks to his powers, he became a celebrity, even appearing on Jay Leno. He was very big in Japan! After M-day, he lost everything and was forced to go and live with his brother. The two had a contentious relationship. He seemed to be older than the average student, as his twin mentioned getting divorced, going to college and having kids etc. His story was told by reporter Sally Floyd for New York newspaper, the Alternative. [Generation M #4]
- Given how his life declined after the loss of his powers, it seems likely he would have underwent Crucible to restore his mutant status.
Contact (Rivera, Frida)
First appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #126
Powers: Psychometry
Notes:
- Likely depowered in M-Day. Fate unknown.
- Another no line “background character” who was named in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13.
Crater (Hallgrimsson, Erik)
First Appearance: New X-Men (1st series) #117
Powers: enhanced durabilty
Notes:
- Another no line “background character” who was named in Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A to Z #13.
- Given his surname, he may have been Icelandic.
- Likely depowered in M-Day. Fate unknown.
Cryptid (Hartnell, Andy)
First appearance: X-Men Unlimited (2nd series) #1
Powers: Enhanced agility and reflexes, green form, yellow eyes
Notes:
- Likely depowered in M-Day. Fate unknown.
- Andy had a physical mutation and therefore could only mingle in mainstream society during Halloween, his favourite holiday. During one such Halloween, where he was “trick or treating” in the area surrounding the X-Mansion, he rescued a young human girl from being abducted. Despite his heroism he was still met by hostility by humans due to his freakish appearance.
Cudgel (Bremmer, Liam)
First appearance: X-Men Unlimited (2nd series) #1
Powers: Turn hands into blunt steel objects
Notes:
- Likely depowered in M-Day. Fate unknown.
- Cudgel was a meanspirited and bullied fellow student Protozoa.
