Introduction
When Grant Morrison's iconic New X-Men run commenced in 2001, he revived the school aspect of the X-Men which at that point had become largely defunct; replaced instead by a kind of science fiction-based ”soap opera,” focused primarily on the interpersonal relationships of a now group of very seasoned adults.
Charles Xavier had been possessed by his literal evil twin, Cassandra Nova, and outed as a mutant. Despite her malevolent intent, the result was arguably positive, as it resulted in a surge in the student population; with many of these aforementioned adults now having a new role as members of the faculty.
While Morrison did create some of these new students some of which became fan favorites like the Stepford Cuckoos, Dust and Beak, it was undoubtedly co-writers Christina Weir and Nunzio DeFilippis who introduced most of this generation's memorable additions in New Mutants (2nd series) and later New X-Men Academy.
The first version of this article was originally drafted in 2005 by one of UXN past contributors, Binaryan. What makes this article so special is that writers Weir and DeFilippis actually contributed additional information about their cast which had not yet been established. Much of this content became canon in the one-shot New X-Men: Academy X Yearbook #1.
A special thanks goes to Weir and DeFilippis for this collaboration which was a rare one for this site.
This article primarily focuses on the student body from the outset of Morrison's run, up to the time that the X-Men moved to Utopia in Uncanny X-Men (1st series) #496-499, as this resulted in the closure of the Institute in Westchester.
